Sacred Harp singing is a non-denominational musical and social event. Participants sing together from the Sacred Harp tunebook, in continuous use and in print since 1844. The tune book uses the shape-note notation system, where the round notes of the scale are replaced by squares, ovals, rectangles, and diamonds to represent the degrees of the scale. Singers “sing the shapes” before singing the lyrics. They face each other in a hollow square and take turns leading tunes. This unaccompanied American music has a powerful, at times otherworldly sound. All are welcome to join in. Don’t miss this unique experience!
